Summers Joinery are a family-run business based in Coventry, established in 1973. The company has consistently grown over the years and have expanding factory and workshop space twice in the past decade, the company’s working site now covers some 14,000 square feet for craftsmen and joiners. They sell a wide range of bespoke timber products from windows and doors to one-of-a-kind wardrobes and residential furniture.
A family firm at heart, the company is run by Lee Summers. With 30 years’ experience as a joiner, Lee is now Managing Director. The company specialise in high quality bespoke joinery, covering a vast range of sectors. Using computer aided design (CAD) and project management software ensures projects are manufactured and delivered to the agreed timescale. While always mindful of their environmental obligations.
High standards
Wood used to manufacture their projects is also recycled in their manufacturing process. Wood waste that would ordinarily be scrapped is turned into briquettes on-site to fuel their renewable Biomass Heating system in the workshop.
Summers Joinery believe that FSC certification matters a great deal to their business and in equal measure, to their customers.

Some projects that Summers Joinery tender for are only available to suppliers that are FSC-certified, so if they did not have the certification they would miss out on a substantial amount of work.
The FSC auditing process is fairly straightforward for them. Support documents and updates in information are regularly issued, so that makes the auditing process go smoothly. The Summers Joinery team have implemented regular meetings with everyone in their internal CoC procedure. They also provide training for both workshop and office staff, and any updates/changes are issued to all members of the team.
The main challenges are in sourcing some timbers that are specifically wanted and specified by their clients, for example Iroko. Some timbers can be difficult to get hold of with FSC certification. In this case they occasionally have to re-specify an alternative FSC-certified option.
The advice Summers Joinery gives for any companies wishing to become FSC-certified is to have a good team in place that can be responsible for the FSC certification process. If a good team is in place, then the process will be easier.
