Dr Owen Davies (Environmental Chamber)
Owen holds a degree in forestry and a PhD in tree crown modelling from Bangor University. His forestry experience encompasses silvicultural research and training, harvesting management and forest planning, and standard setting and auditing. For nearly a decade he was Forest Standards Manager for FSC UK, and responsible for FSC's input into revisions of the UK Woodland Assurance Standard. As well as deep technical knowledge of the FSC normative framework, this role required the ability to facilitate discussion and foster consensus among economic, environmental and social stakeholders on issues ranging from high conservation values to pesticide risk assessments.
Owen is now an independent consultant and an FSC environmental chamber member. His professional focus is still very much on technical aspects of the FSC system.
While working for FSC UK he represented standard developers in the technical working group which produced FSC's international generic indicators for the use of highly hazardous pesticides. He is currently a member of the technical working group revising FSC's procedures for developing forest stewardship standards and controlled wood risk assessments.
“After a decade of experience of FSC, I’d like to think that I have no illusions about the strengths and weaknesses of the system. For me, FSC’s greatest strength is the wonderful community of people who are committed to its mission. My main motivation in becoming a trustee is to support Rosie and the rest of the FSC UK team”, Owen explained.
