This is a guest article by Lucy Bendon, Marketing Manager at Whitehall Printing.
Whitehall Printing are celebrating 15 years of using FSC-certified papers as standard across it’s operation and was one of the first in the South West to gain FSC Chain of Custody certification (FSC® C009453).
The independent family business was founded in 1977 and handed down a generation to brothers Adam and Joe Bendon in 2007. The brothers were keen to make the environment a priority and sought out FSC certification when awareness was relatively low. Marketing Manager Lucy explains;
“Back then a lot of people thought that paper came from rainforests so we had a huge education piece to explain that new forests had been planted for pulp, thereby increasing the number of trees on our planet, rather than reducing them”.
From a low-energy facility in central Bristol, Whitehall Printing produce a huge range of FSC certified lithographic and digitally printed materials, from business stationery to marketing campaigns and large promotional displays.
The city of Bristol won Green Capital of Europe in 2015 and has held some of the highest recycling rates in the UK. The city was also named Britain’s Greenest City in a 2024 in a recent study.
Director Joe says local clients have embraced the opportunity to know where their papers come from; “Bristol has a vibrant creative green city so renewing our FSC licence each year has been essential to supporting our clients’ sustainability goals,and being a relevant supplier. Our clients are very eco-conscious and want to feel confidence in the origin of their products.”
In September, Whitehall Printing attended the Festival of Sustainable Business in Bristol to promote the qualities of renewable paper and print.
Lucy, Marketing Manager said: “The Festival was a great example of the city coming together to learn and support each other in positive change. We were reminding marketeers that paper has an excellent life-cycle and is the world’s most recycled material. Sadly we can not yet say that about electronic communications.”
Green choices
The printers are also audited each year for the stringent international accreditation, ISO 14001 which looks at business operations as whole with a view to minimising waste and increasing recycling. Every element of production has been tweaked from removing plastic packaging to using 100% renewable energy to power their presses. In 2022 the printers achieved Carbon Neutral status, balancing any emissions that cannot be eradicated through investment in renewable energy projects around the world. They’ve also recently introduced electric vehicle delivery to emission-free deliveries in Bristol and Bath.
